0.5 inch outside diameter DOM tubing to ASTM A513 Type 5, also written as 1/2 in DOM tubing. Electric resistance welded strip is drawn over a mandrel, which removes the weld flash and leaves concentric walls with a smooth bore that machines, welds and takes a finish predictably.
Price: quoted per specification. Steel prices move with the raw material market, so every quotation is confirmed at the time of order.
Specifications
- Size: 1/2 in outside diameter (0.5 in / 12.7 mm)
- Standard: ASTM A513 Type 5 (DOM)
- Steel grade: 1010 / 1020, other grades on agreement
- Wall thickness: 0.028-0.120 in (0.7-3.0 mm) typical, quoted to drawing
- Production: electric resistance welded, then cold drawn over mandrel
Wall thickness and weight per metre
On a 0.5 in outside diameter the wall sets both the bore and the weight you pay for. The table lists the walls we run on this size; weights are calculated for steel at 7.85 g/cm³ and are the figures used for quotation and freight.
| Wall (in) | Wall (mm) | Inside diameter (in) | Weight (kg/m) | Weight (lb/ft) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.035 | 0.9 | 0.430 | 0.26 | 0.17 |
| 0.049 | 1.2 | 0.402 | 0.35 | 0.24 |
| 0.065 | 1.7 | 0.370 | 0.45 | 0.30 |
| 0.083 | 2.1 | 0.334 | 0.55 | 0.37 |
| 0.095 | 2.4 | 0.310 | 0.61 | 0.41 |
Walls outside this list are quoted to drawing. Maximum wall is limited by the draw itself: on a small diameter the mandrel has less room to work, so heavy walls on small sizes are made to order rather than held.
Typical applications
- Bushings and sleeves
- Rollers and conveyor parts
- Shock absorber bodies
- Steering and suspension components
- Machined tubular parts quoted to drawing
All sizes: see the full DOM tubing size chart for outside diameters from 1/2 to 2-1/2 inch and typical wall thicknesses.
Quality and packing: tubes are protected with anti-rust oil and packed seaworthy, in wooden cases where agreed. Each lot is tested for chemical composition, yield and tensile strength, flattening, elongation and dimensions, with visual inspection and NDT available on request.

What to specify in the order
| Item | What to write | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 12.7 mm OD × wall, or 0.5 in × wall | The two are the same outside diameter but not the same tolerance system |
| Grade | 1010 or 1020; 4130 on agreement | Decides yield and whether the certificate can be issued |
| Type | ASTM A513 Type 5 (DOM) | “DOM” alone is a process, not a specification |
| Length and ends | Random 6 m, or fixed length with square cut and deburr | Fixed lengths and deburring change packing and cost |
| Testing | Chemical, tensile, flattening, dimensional; NDT on request | Without it there is nothing to submit at final inspection |
Choosing 0.5 in DOM tubing
At 12.7 mm outside diameter the bore is small, so the wall is usually chosen from the inside out: you know the pin, rod or screw that has to pass, and the wall follows. This is the size where a 0.010 in change in wall moves the bore by 0.020 in, so the drawing should give the inside diameter if that is what the part runs on.
Walls we run on this size: 0.035 / 0.049 / 0.065 / 0.083 / 0.095 in (0.9–2.4 mm). Below that range the tube is normally supplied as welded tube; above it the draw rate drops and lead time grows.
