DOM tubing (drawn over mandrel) to ASTM A513 and EN 10305-2, from 0.5 to 2.5 inch outside diameter. The strip is welded and then cold drawn over a mandrel, which removes the weld flash and leaves concentric walls and a clean bore for bushings, rollers, shock absorber bodies and machined parts.
DOM tube, DOM pipe, drawn over mandrel: one product, three names
The same tube is ordered under three or four different names, and the name depends on the trade of the buyer rather than on the product. A shop that builds shock absorbers writes DOM tubing, a maintenance department writes DOM pipe, and a drawing from a mill writes drawn over mandrel tubing. The tube, the tolerance and the price are the same.
| Name in the enquiry | Who writes it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| DOM tubing | US distributors, job shops, suspension builders | Welded tube drawn over a mandrel with the weld flash removed |
| DOM pipe | Maintenance, repair shops, pipe buyers | The same tube, sized and sold as pipe |
| DOM steel tube / steel DOM tubing | Catalogues, drawings, purchasing lists | Same product, tube spelling rather than tubing |
| Drawn over mandrel tubing | Mill drawings, engineers | The process written out instead of the acronym |
| CDW, cold drawn welded | European buyers | EN 10305-2 equivalent route |
One point is worth confirming before the order: DOM pipe is still ordered by outside diameter and wall, not by nominal bore. If the enquiry arrives as a pipe size, we convert it to OD and wall and send the drawing back for confirmation, because a schedule number and a DOM wall are not the same measurement.

The sizes below are the ones that repeat, and each one has its own page with the wall range and the tolerance. Anything between them is drawn to order rather than cut from a shelf, so a non-standard wall adds lead time but not a problem.
| Outside diameter | Millimetres | Wall range | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 inch DOM tubing | 12.7 mm | 1.0-2.0 mm | Pins, small bushings, linkages |
| 0.75 inch DOM tubing | 19.05 mm | 1.2-3.0 mm | Spacers, control rods, sleeves |
| 1 inch DOM tubing | 25.4 mm | 1.5-3.5 mm | Shock bodies, shafts, bushing stock |
| 1.25 inch DOM tubing | 31.75 mm | 1.5-4.0 mm | Rollers, shafts, machined sleeves |
| 1.5 inch DOM tubing | 38.1 mm | 1.5-4.5 mm | Cylinder bodies, bushing stock |
| 1.75 inch DOM tubing | 44.45 mm | 2.0-5.0 mm | Fork tubes, suspension links, roll cages |
| 2 inch DOM tubing | 50.8 mm | 2.0-5.0 mm | Heavy bushings, machine frames |
| 2.5 inch DOM tubing | 63.5 mm | 2.5-6.0 mm | Large sleeves, hydraulic parts |
1.75 DOM tubing carries most of the suspension and off-road demand, because 44.45 mm OD is the size that fits a fork leg and a shock eye without an adapter. When the part will be bent, the wall and the grade decide whether the bend wrinkles: 1020 DOM tubing bends cleanly at a wall of about 4 percent of OD, and thinner walls need a mandrel bender.
FAQ
Is DOM tubing the same as seamless?
No, but it is close in behaviour. Seamless tube starts as a pierced billet with no weld at all; DOM starts as ERW tube and is then drawn over a mandrel, which removes the weld flash and brings the wall back to concentric. For a bore that has to be round, DOM does the job at a lower price; for pressure and thin walls, seamless is the safer choice.
What is 1.75 DOM tubing used for?
Fork legs, suspension links, roll cages and anything that needs a 44.45 mm tube with a clean bore and a wall thick enough to take a thread or a weld.
Can DOM tubing be bent?
Yes. DOM bends well because the weld has already been drawn out, so there is no hard seam to crack on the outside radius. Tight radii and thin walls need a mandrel bender and, usually, a bend test on the first length.
What does 1020 DOM tubing mean?
1020 is the steel grade, DOM is the process. 1020 is the ordinary low-carbon grade used for most DOM tubing, and it machines and welds easily; where more strength is needed the same tube is drawn in 1026 or replaced by seamless 4130.
Is DOM pipe the same as DOM tubing?
Yes. DOM pipe is DOM tubing sold under the pipe name, and it is still ordered by OD and wall rather than by nominal bore.
How do I know which wall to order?
Send the drawing or the working pressure. For a bushing or a sleeve the wall follows the OD; for a pressure part the wall follows the stress calculation, and we will quote the nearest standard wall that satisfies it.
